Masked characters in the Star Wars Universe

Hello everyone,

Welcome to my blog about masked characters on feature films and TV Shows. As you can see, the actual global pandemic is inspiring me and I need to escape from the sad reality we are facing through to that blog.

Here, I will present several characters from different universes in a funny and a personal way. I have a schedule for the articles but I will keep it secret, you have to wait to enjoy my discoveries and shares. I can give you a clue: I will talk about blockbusters, TV shows and independent films.

Enough with the presentation, let’s begin with the first article!

We are starting with the first characters who are coming to my mind when I’m thinking about masked characters : those from the Star Wars Universe.

All started with George Lucas who created at the end of the seventies, the most amazing world ever. At the beginning, everyone thought that he was just a crazy kid and that his idea will never work as a movie. But right now in 2020, here from my room, I’m really curious to see the faces of people that told that stupidity to him.

Of course, the most powerful character of that universe and also the best known across the galaxy, even to people who have never watched the saga, is Darth Vader. Apparently, he is an ancient Jedi, which means he was a good guy, but when he saw the Covid-19 pandemic coming, he turned to the Dark Side of the Force and became one of the most charismatic and powerful character ever created in cinema history. Darth Vader is clearly not afraid of that virus, he can destroy it in a second and with his mask, he can’t have any diseases.

One interesting anecdote is that “Vader” means “Father” in Ducth so clearly our friends from the Netherlands known since the beginning that Vader is Luke’s father. But the truth is that Lucas himself didn’t know that his movie will become one of the most popular cinematographic saga ever. On the firsts versions of the script, Vader was just the enemy and Anakin Skywalker was alive somewhere in the Galaxy. If you don’t know it,Vader was Anakin when he was on the Bright Side of the Force. Obviously, he cannot be Vader if it’s the case. At the end, Anakin is not mentioned in the first Star Wars movie (today episode IV). And then, when Lucas saw the extent of his universe, he played with that Legend saying that the big reveal was on the name of the character since the beginning.

A few years after his existence, Vader had a disciple. A weird guy who wanted to be just like him and as powerful as him. That guy is Kylo Ren. He is wearing a mask too. He is the leader of the Prime Order and he is quite powerful.

But unfortunately, one day, Kylo Ren took off his mask and when the audience and the people around him saw his face for the first time, he lost all his charism and legend says that he was took away by the Coronavirus. So bye bye J.J, sorry,Kylo... Hope to see you again soon (or not?).

The last character that I want to talk to you about is one of my favorite of that incredible universe. It is Captain Phasma. She is so charismatic and so strong. And yes, SHE IS A SHE. Phasma is one of those rare females characters wearing a mask in our POP culture feature films.SHE IS A BOSS. She leads the Stormtroopers (it is like an army on the Star Wars Universe) of the Prime Order. At the beginning, the director J.J. Abrams wanted to make it a male character, as if for him, only a man can lead an army (WTF?). In fact, the costume was made for Kylo Ren by the costume designer but Abrams didn't liked it for his main villain. Then, when he realized that there is not so much females characters on his movie and on the Star Wars Universe, he decided to create that amazing character and to make it a woman.

Phasma disappears when she fights against the hero Finn (who died later of course of Covid-19 because he is not wearing any mask) but according to my informations, she is not dead. She is in fact preparing her incredible come back. Of course, the coronavirus can’t do anything to her.

We can note that on this universe, the characters who are wearing masks are villains. They are from the Dark Side of the Force. Maybe for the creators, the mask, who is sometimes a way to hide a face, is associated with evil. But today for sure, masked characters are the most powerful ones and are those who have more chances to face the pandemic.

Bane and The Dark Knight trilogy

I remember the release of the movie The Dark Knight Rises since it was yesterday. This is the third movie of the Nolan’s Batman trilogy. Released in 2012 (the year we originally had to die according to the Mayas and they were wrong so maybe the actual pandemic will not kill us and we will remember it in several years as we remember the December 21st 2012).

Legend says that Nolan made his Batman trilogy for Warner to make his“authors movies”. Can you actually imagine a big studio as Warner producing a weird (but amazing) movie such as Inception? I don’t. I think if it was another director who had an idea like that, we were never be able to see that movie. Directing with success Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and then The Dark Knight Rises allowed Nolan to make Inception, Interstellar and Dunkirk.

“One blockbuster for the studio and one author film for me” - Clever!

Of course, before the pandemic, if I had to talk about a character in The Dark Knight trilogy I would for sure pick The Joker, played by Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight (by the way, the best incarnation of that amazing character so far). But The Joker will actually not survive the Covid-19 pandemic because he is only wearing makeup and not a mask.

NOW...

PLEASE LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, STAND UP AND MAKE SOME NOISE FOOOOOOORRRRR THHHHEEEEEE STRRROOONNGGEESSSTTTTT OFFFF ALLLLLL... hum... sorry... the article was quite serious until now so I continue that way. The Batman enemy that will stay is BANE. ANNNNN AMMAAAAZZZIIINNNGGGG TOOMMM HARDYY interpretation.. sorry here I go again.

Firstly, if you ask yourself (and I’m sure you are), yes Bane is the guy on my profile picture here on Tumblr.

We never have informations like that on bad news channels such as BFM (famous 24/7 news channel in France) but I heard that Bane is destroying the virus in Gotham City by his own. This guy is too strong. He was born on one of the worst prison of the world, and that is the reason why he has physical and mental strengths. I hope that when he will finish with that invisible very little “enemy”, such as Macron likes to call the Covid-19 virus because “WE ARE IN WAR”, Bane will destroy the duck leading America right now.

I have a personal link to Bane’s movie.I remember when I went to watch The Dark Knight Rises on theaters. I expected that movie for a long time. I went with my best friend to watch it and I was with my jogging, it was so comfortable, like home - an amazing and rare moment in life!

But I remember a bad news too. The release of that movie was spoilt by a big idiot who decided to kill people on one of the firsts projections of the movie in the US. I heard that this guy was crushed by Bane last year - Ché! (oh, sorry that is not an English word but is the first one who comes to my mind).

Thanks for all dear Bane and I hope that you will Make America Great Again after the worldwide pandemic!

The Mad Ma(sk)x Universe

More seriously let me talk to you about my relationship with the Mad Max Universe. A quite funny one.

When I was on my firsts years at the university, I wanted to increase my cinematographic knowledge. One day, my dad bought an amazing Blu-ray Box with the firsts three Mad Maxmovies, that was a few years before the release of Fury Road. Before that, I never watched any of those movies. So I decided to organize a movie night with my new friends at the university to discover together the George Miller's universe. At the beginning, we were very excited and we enjoyed a lot the first one. But then, the second and the third was less exciting for us. Maybe, those movies were getting olds and I remember finishing the night a little bit disappointed.

The last Mad Max movie, Fury Road, was released in 2015 and was opening the Cannes Film Festival this year. And it was my first Festival. I remember, I went to late to assist to the Opening Ceremony and the screening of the movie so I went to another projection, several days after in a little cinema in Cannes. I think there, the screenings conditions was not really good for an amazing visual movie like that and I remember, I didn't really enjoyed it that time.

But then, after the Festival when I came home, all my friends told me that they loved it. He was released on all theaters and they had all seen it. So I decided to rewatch it in my favorite theater with better conditions than in the little one in Cannes. And..... ITTTTT WWWASSSSS AMMAZZINNNNNGGGG!!!!! What a movie!!!!! I really appreciated it the second time and I was charmed by the Mad Max Universe.

So, now that I told you my life who certainly doesn’t interest you at all. I will talk about masked characters on that universe. As my favorite one is Fury Road, and my blog is personal, I will focus on the characters of that movie.

First of all, thank you very much Tom Hardy, you are an amazing actor. In my precedent post you were Bane and now you are Mad Max. You have the incredible chance to be present in two articles on my blog.

NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! WHYYYYYYY???? WHHHYYYY DID YOU TAKE OFF YOUR MASK????? Dear TomMax, now you will probably die because of the pandemic, IDIOT!!!!!!! R.I.P!

Now that Mad Max is dead because he clearly is a covidiot (yes this is a real word right now, means that you are an idiot because you don’t follow the lockdown prescriptions), let’s talk about the real one.

Immortan Joeis the one that will break down the pandemic in the Mad Max Universe. He is wearing a beautiful mask and he will never take it off, he is not as stupid as Max!

Ok, you’re right, he is a bad guy but as we seen on the other articles of that blog, on blockbusters, most part of times, is the bad ones who are wearing masks. So right now, imagine people living on our world after the pandemic! Did you really want to make out of it?

Money Heist, where masksbecome virals

Welcome to my blog again,This second wave of articles will be about TV Shows. I will focus on 3 actual shows in which we can find some good masked characters (or not?).

The first one is Money Heist in English. The original Spanish title is La Casa de Papel. Maybe it’s because I’m a latin, but I prefer the original title. But that blog is in English so I don’t mind, I will call it Money Heist.

If you never heard about this show (and if it is the case, I’m asking myself in which world you live in?), Money Heist is about a gang of robbers leads by a smart guy who are robbing the money fabric in Madrid, Spain.

I chose to talk about this show because I think his success story is unbelievable. At the beginning, the show was produced for the Spanish channel Antenna 3. At the end of the first season, the audience was not really good and the channel decided to stop the show! -What a big mistake, those guys/girls are really stupid!!!

Then, Netflix, who is always on the good moves, bought the show to broadcast it all around the world, as they made for a lot of shows since they are broadcasting. And then, on Netflix, it was a big success. Money Heist became one of the most popular shows on the platform - and the language there is Spanish and not English. It became the first non-English speaking show on the platform, and in some countries, especially in Europe, Money Heist is the most popular show on Netflix.

Hum.... OK, the last season is not as good as the first one, but in Money Heist there is some interesting masked characters. In fact, to hide their faces, our gang of robbers are wearing masks when people outside the fabric (such as cops) can see them.

Yes, they are wearing those famous Dali’s masks. And I heard that they will save them from Covid-19. Thanks to those masks, they will take out the money and enjoy it peacefully after the pandemic.

Today, those masks are becoming very popular and a lot of people are wearing them all around the world - the mask is a protection against the virus, of course, but it’s also a sign of protest. In fact, on the show, the robbers are presenting themselves as the“Resistance” - or“La Resistencia” in Spanish!

What is amazing on this show is that writers make you feel close to robbers - you love them and you hate cops. There is not really bad or good characters,it’s like in the real world.

Hope that the Dali’s masks will protect them from the pandemic and that we will see them again in a better season!

The Masked Mandalorian

I’m sorry, on this article I will talk about the Star Wars Universe again. But this time, this article is about a TV show and not the movies - so is different from the previous one!

LET ME INTRODUCE YOU.... THE AMAZIIIINNGGGG... THE MOST POWERFUL AND INTERESTING BOUNTY HUNTER OF THE GALAXY.......MANDO!!!!

We don’t know Mando’s real name. He is from the TV show The Mandalorian. The first original series of the new Disney+ platform. Now that Disney drained the saga on theaters, they are making TV shows of it. But god, this one was so good!!!!

At the beginning, people (me included) thought that the show will be bad but in fact, Disney know how to make good entertaining stuff! For the Star-Wars Day (May the 4th.. did you see the pun? - May the 4th be with you!!), Disney started to broadcast a making-of series about that show and I can’t wait to watch the entire season. I heard that they invented a 360° digital film-set to make the VFXs in the same time as they are shooting. Thanks to that process, actors have a better idea of what the scene will be and they can play better.

As I said, Mando is a bounty hunter. His work his to achieve missions to earn money. Sometimes he has to kill people, but he is in reality on the bright side of the force. He sees his life change the day he encounters“The Child”, renamed“Baby Yoda” on social media because of his resemblance with the great Master Yoda from the movies.

The thing is that this “Child” cannot be Master Yoda because this one died before the events of The Mandalorian. In my opinion, The Child is an AMAZING marketing product for Disney who will sell a ton of stuffed toys of him in his amusements parks when they will be able to open again. The Child literally stole the star to Mando.

But anyway, in my opinion, the real interesting character on that show is Mando. He is so complex and endearing even if he never took of his mask. He wears (mental?) scars and Legend says that anyone (except a droid) has never seen his face. He always eats alone. Mando is brillant, he saw the pandemic coming to the Galaxy and he started to take some good habits to face it.

He his a great character and he will soon return to our screens because of course, Covid-19 cannot do anything to him. Can you imagine? Disney launched a streaming platform on his shoulders (and of course on Baby Yoda as well but hewas absent of all commercials, Disney wanted that people discover him directly on the show and then make him a star on social media, and it worked - BRILLIANT!!!!).

A maskeddisappointment

This article will be about a show who disappointed me. That show isWatchmen, recently made by HBO. This is an adaptation of the comic book. I waited for this show for so long and I think this is why the disappointment is so big.

On the paper, the show looks amazing. Written by Damon Lindelof who is the creator of famous shows like Lost or The Leftovers. Plus, the trailer was really good. Oh! I specify that I really enjoyed the movie made by Zack Snyder and I think that this is why Ididn’t really liked the series.

YEESSS... Dear Dr Manhantan, for me the movie is way better than the show!!!! This is my biggest series disappointment of last year.... I was so sad when I saw the result! It was boring, not really interesting and other shows have treated similar subjects way better!!! Lindelof tried to transpose the Watchmen world into our real world and to denounce some problems the American society is facing today like racism or Trump.

Anyway, the reason that I talk about this show on my blog is that even if I don’t like it, there is some good masked characters on it. In the world of Watchmen, people are masked to hide their faces, their identities or to protest. I heard that now, they are wearing their masks to protect themselves from the pandemic. I can reassure you, they have enough masks for everyone - THIS IS NOT LIKE IN FRANCE RIGHT NOW!!!!!!

Maybe in our country, we are not making enough protest - LOL!

The thing is that the“Gilets Jaunes” wasn’t wearing any mask. If they were, can you imagine how many masks we would have had at the beginning of the pandemic? A lot!!We have to rethink our ways to protest here in France! In Watchmen world at least, they can protect themselves from the virus and survive thanks to their protests.

When I started to think about this article, I wanted to talk to you about Angela Abar who is the main character of the show. She is very interesting. But I’m sorry, the actual situation we are all facing made me talk about the show itself and the masks - or maybe, the disappointment is too big and I’m not inspired enough!!!!! Who knows??

Indies (films) masks

Hello to my blog again for the third and the last wave of articles.

I talked about blockbusters and TV shows in which we can find masked characters but right now, I want to share with you some of my discoveries about those characters in independent films.

A movie that I discovered thanks to my researches for that blog is Frank. It’s a British movie directed by Lenny Abrahamson. It tells the story of a musician who dreams to become a rock-star. Some day, he encounters a band who is looking for a new keyboard player. The singer of that band is Frank, a weird guy who is always wearing a big mask as you can see down below.

The musician and Frank will have a really strong relationship and that will create issues between all the members of the band. They will split up because of this new musician. But anyway, this two guys can make music by themselves. They don’t need a band. Look they are spending good time together!

I have to confess, I don’t know if I like the movie or not. Humor here is some kind of burlesque. It’s British humor and it is quite specific. Anyway, I will remember this weird movie for my whole life.

Do you want a funny anecdote ? YES OF COURSE!!The guy behind Frank’s mask is Michael Fassbender - Oh yes!!!!

Can you imagine those guys making music during lockdown? Because of course, as Frank is always wearing a mask, they have nothing to fear from the pandemic. They can live their art peacefully. I think that as they are making music 24/7, they don’t know that the whole world is facing a pandemic. Those guys are not interesting in playing in front of an audience during a concert because Frank is really anxious and he is really bad on a stage. But on a garage, they can make as music as they want.They are so lucky - ENJOY GUYS!!!

The Masks of Terror

Oh, I can’t wait to write this article!!!!!! I’m so sorry for the weak souls here but this one will be about a movie that I’m making myself right now in my mind : The Masks of Terror.

I hope that you are as excited as I am right now!Here is the pitch : One night, a mysterious virus is escaping from a laboratory... oh sorry I can’t write that, I will have some problems!

Let’s do it again : One night, a mysterious virus is appearingon earth. A scientist, coming back from the futur, who knows what the virus will do to humanity, decided to wake up the most dangerous serials killers to kill Covid-19. But the situation will soon be uncontrollable...

The first serial killer that this crazy scientist woke up is Leatherface - My man!!!

I warned you!!! Are you already here? Good! So, I continue with my crazy story!

The second amazing character on that movie is Hannibal Lecter. Do you know him? He is my best friend for a while. He really is a kind person.

The next guy that the scientist woke up is Jason and he doesn't like Michael (Leatherface) at all, can you imagine what will happen if those guys meet themselves?

Oh, oh wait!!! I think that Jason met Freddy (who was awake as well of course), and this one is not his friend. He hates him even more than Laetherface.

Oh, I forgot a last character for my amazing story! I had to begin with this one because this character is the most important!

PLEASE..... WELCOME.... THE MOST AMAZING ONE!! THE HERO OF MY STORY -GHOSTFACE!!!!!

I have to specify here that my story is inspired by the most amazing slasher's movies characters and I note that there are to much men! Where are the women? Oh! I have an answer for you! My hero here is in fact an heroine. Ghostface is the most clever and the strongest of all serial killers. She will win this “Killers War” and she will kill this stupid virus who prevented us from our freedom.

Masked eyes wide

I’m so sad.... This is my last article on that blog!

I want to share with you another discovery that I made during lockdown and thanks to the researches that I made to find different masked characters on TV shows and movies. As you can guess with the title of that article, today we are going to talk about Eyes Wide Shut.

I have a weird relationship with Kubrick’s movies. When I was a cinema student at the university, everyone talked about 2001 and I told myself that I have to see this movie. When I saw it, Ididn’t really enjoyed it, it was very slow and it was boring for me. Since, I never watched a Kubrick’s movie again until today.

Eyes Wide Shut was really really different than 2001. In a certain way I enjoyed this movie. It was really weird but very interesting. It’s not really a masterpiece for me but I see their some interesting points and there are masked characters (as scary as in The Masks of Terror) in this movie.

Can you imagine? Right now, it is the end of the lockdown in France and slowly, people are going to make parties again. Maybe, we will have to make parties dressed and masked as in Eyes Wide Shut ---- hum, hum ---- of course, I think that everyone will not make sexual orgies as they are making in that weird party on the movie. I’m not judging anyone here - you can make what you want with your“friends” on parties, but this whole scene of the party sounds really awkward to me. It was like Tom Cruise arrived in a sect, it scared me.

Oh! I’m so sorry, this article seems boring because there is no pictures!! Let me correct this and present you you’re new outfits for your parties this summer :

A lot of moviegoers said that Kubrick was a visionary, and before the pandemic they didn’t know how right they were! He presented us, in his last movie in 1999, how we are going to make parties --- oh sorry no! --- how we will have to dress on parties in 2020! What a visionary!

Kubrick you are a genius!! Unfortunately, you never going to know why because you never saw a pandemic like we are living right now. But you told us to dress to meet other people in a post-pandemic time. Thank you!
